PESHAWAR: Three policemen were martyred and two injured in a pre-dawn attack on Saturday in Gilgit-Baltistan when militants attacked a police station in Kargah area.
A police official told The Express Tribune that seven militants attacked the police station. “As a result, we lost three policemen and two others were injured,” he said. The deceased were identified as Hawaldar Fazlur Rehman, Sepoy Nawab Khan and Sepoy Abdul Wakil. The policemen were martyred as they slept.
The injured were rushed to the District Headquarter Hospital Gilgit. “One of the terrorists was also killed in the shootout while another was critically injured?” the official added. The terrorist killed in the attack was affiliated with a militant group gaining prominence in Afghanistan and was a senior commander for the group in the Afghan province of Nuristan.
A meeting of the Apex Committee of Gilgit Baltistan, which met a day earlier, had decided to avenge the attacks on schools and bring those involved to justice. The burning of the schools in Diamer district was condemned in the strongest of words, an official statement said.
The Inspector General of Police G-B Sanaullah Abbasi said a heavy contingent of police was deployed in Kargah and a search operation was underway. He said he will be able to share more details soon after he visits the area. The IG was visiting the injured at the hospital.
At least four suspects were arrested in the ensuing search operation by security forces in the area.
The area of Kargah is connected to Tangir and other parts of Diamer where 12 schools were torched by militants a few days back.
