PESHAWAR: Advocate General (AG) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Abdul Samad Khan on Thursday tendered his resignation with immediate effect.

Khan resigned following the appointment of former provincial sports minister Mehmood Khan as K-P’s next chief minister. He added that the new chief minister will be at liberty to nominate a suitable candidate for AG's position.

Khan, who served as AG under the interim government for a total of 43 days, submitted his resignation to the governor K-P. In the letter, Khan said that he had been appointed by caretaker chief minister Dost Mohammad Khan for a period of three months. However, he no longer wants to continue as the incoming political setup has already nominated a new chief minister for the province. Therefore, the AG believes that "he is constrained to resign from office to allow the newly appointed chief minister to nominate a man of his choice".

Prior to July 25 polls, the caretaker K-P government appointed Khan along with 26 other law officers to the province after terminating the services of the officers appointed by the previous K-P government.

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) ruled the termination of law officers and appointment of new ones as 'authorised' by the interim setup. The court further ordered to reinstate law officers appointed by the previous provincial government.
