12 schools in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district burnt down

Rehman Malik takes notice of the incident, calls for a report and immediate arrest of responsible persons.

DIAMER: At least 12 schools were set on fire by unidentified attackers late Thursday night in Gilgit-Baltistan's Diamer district.

Initial reports revealed that at least six school were all girls educational institutes situated in Diamer's Chilas area. The school attacked include Royini Girls School, Takya Girls School, one school each in Hodur and Thor neighbourhoods and three all-girl schools in Darel division, Giyal village and Khanbanri. Another two schools were torched in Gali Bala and Gali Payen.

After launching an inquiry into the incident, the local law-enforcement forces initiated a search operation. IG Gilgit Baltistan Sanaullah Abbasi and Force Commander of Northern Areas Major-General Saqib Mehmood also arrived in Chilas.

Why terrorists attack education

The school attacked were under-construction, said Commissioner Diamer Division Abdul Waheed Shah. He added that the authorities were examining damage to the buildings.

Taking notice of the incident, Chairman of the Senate Committee for Interior Affairs, Rehman Malik sought a report from Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan and demanded LEAs to arrest those responsible at the earliest.

ZAHEER | 5 years ago | Reply A very sad incident as these are not burnt down or damaged actually the terrorists tried to ruin the future of G-B people and the development of the administratively fifth province of the country, this is not only a terrorism but a mindset which targets educational institutions specially for girls. The exemplary punishment (minimum death sentence) needed in such cases secondly in a mega city like Karachi the land grabbers occupied the school and lock down for students is another style of terrorism which should be dealt with strict action. Unfortunately after 70 years of independence we are still busy in making our educational system in order to provide better education.
