Cellular mobile subscriptions drop 0.5% to 150.24 million

The number of cellular mobile subscriptions decreased 0.05% on a monthly basis to 150.24 million, according to data published by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for June, 2018,

This takes overall teledensity to 72.81% of the population. In May the number of cellular mobile subscriptions amounted to 150.32 million.

Mobile broadband users increased to 56.08 million from 55.47 million, while total broadband subscriptions increased from 57.74 million to 58.33 million.

Jazz continued to be the market leader with a 37% market share, translating to 55.47 million users, ahead of Telenor with a 29% share and 43.56 million users. Zong remained in third place with 30.89 million users, while 20.31 users subscribed to Ufone.

In the category of mobile broadband, Jazz remained the market leader, increasing its number of subscribers from 18.86 million to 19.21 million. Zong saw its user base increase from 16.47 million in May to 16.62 million in June.

Telenor witnessed a decline of 0.6% in overall broadband subscribers, from 13.7 million in May to 13.62 million in June. Ufone, which offers only 3G services, saw its subscriptions increase to 6.63 million against 6.45 million in May, an increase of 2.8%.


Zong’s 3G subscriptions dropped by 1.17% during the month, from 9.38 million in May to 9.27 million in June. On the other hand, its 4G subscription increased drastically in the month from 7.09 million to 7.35 million, an increase of 3.67%.

Telecom remains biggest source of revenue for Punjab

Experts in the industry believe the rise is due to the migration of Zong’s users from 3G to 4G.

Jazz’s 3G users increased from 14.82 million to 14.83 million and its 4G subscribers from 4.04 million to 4.38 million, a change of 8.42%.

Telenor’s 3G users fell from 10.76 million to 10.51 million while 4G subscribers surged from 2.93 million to 3.12 million. The company witnessed a 6.48% increase in the 4G category.
