ISLAMABAD: As the country is rocked by back-to-back terrorist attacks targeting election rallies, the top election body has sought detailed briefing from officials of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) over security threats faced by candidates.

“The competent authority has desired to be immediately briefed on security threats to various political persons and the prevailing security situation,” read the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) directive issued to Nacta on Friday.

Mastung massacre: 128 martyred, over 200 injured in suicide blast claimed by Islamic State

The commission directed the Nacta's national coordinator to arrange the briefing on Saturday.

The chief election commissioner (CEC) will take stock of security threats being faced by politicians and candidates, an ECP spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan strongly condemned the Mastung massacre and attack on a convoy in Bannu and sought reports of the incidents.

The CEC sought report from the chief minister, IGP and chief secretary over the Mastung massacre. The CEC also asked for a detailed report as to why candidates had not been provided security despite time and again directives of the commission, a press release issued on Friday said.

He also expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the blasts.

The CEC ordered provision of foolproof security to all candidates without any discrimination in order to ensure peaceful conduct of general elections.
