No delay in polls acceptable: PTI

Fawad calls for changing governors, wonders what ECP, PM are waiting for

Chaudhry also called for an internal probe to investigate the financial matters as former finance minister Ishaq Dar repeatedly accused his predecessor Miftah Ismail. “They all are part of the PML-N and therefore we hold Sharif responsible for inflation,” he said. PHOTO:FILE

ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has said it will not accept any delay in elections and is ready to extend all possible cooperation to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for free and fair polls.

“It is the constitutional responsibility of the ECP to ensure free, fair and timely polls. No delay will be acceptable in the conduct of elections,” said PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry while addressing a press conference on Monday.

He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was trying to make the elections controversial and condemned a recent statement from the PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif hinting at his party’s boycott of the general elections.

“The PML-N is targeting the judiciary, and the anti-army statements by Nawaz Sharif have put us in the grey list of the FATF,” he alleged.

Chaudhry once again demanded of the ECP to remove all the four provincial governors, specifically the governor of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), to ensure transparency in elections. He claimed that the K-P governor was still responsible for management of the tribal belt.

Opposition's protest forces delay in passage of new higher education law

“All transfers, postings and funding pertaining to the area are conducted by the governor in-charge,” he said, adding that the K-P governor was always changed as per norm. “We fail to understand what the interim prime minister and the ECP are waiting for,” he said.

While demanding a swift reshuffle in bureaucracy, especially in Punjab and Sindh, the PTI spokesperson said that the son of the Punjab governor was contesting elections and the governor himself was involved in campaigns and addressed bar associations on behalf of Sharif. He also said the governor of Balochistan, a brother of Mahmood Khan Achakzai, had not been changed.

Chaudhry also called for an internal probe to investigate the financial matters as former finance minister Ishaq Dar repeatedly accused his predecessor Miftah Ismail. “They all are part of the PML-N and therefore we hold Sharif responsible for inflation,” he said.

He likewise appealed to the FATA Muttahida Qabail Party to end its protest seeking delay in general elections.

PTI demands change of governors before upcoming polls

“The transfer of powers is slow. Despite the flaws, we have faith in the ECP to conduct peaceful elections. Gas and electricity entities are still under Sharif ‘dynasty’ and they are exploiting them,” he said.

Meanwhile, PTI's Senator Faisal Javed said that the state-run television and radio should remain neutral in their general elections coverage.
