PESHAWAR:
Terming past alliances as ‘harsh’ and a ‘blunder’, senior leaders of the Pakistan People Party have dispelled the possibility of forming an electoral alliance with the Awami National Party (ANP) in next month’s general elections.

ANP should stop raising the slogan of ‘Bacha Khani Pakar Da’ otherwise they will torture the soul of late Abdul Ghaffar Khan aka Bacha Khan, stated senior PPP leaders at the Peshawar Press Club as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Akhunzada Irfanullah announced to join the PPP and to contest the upcoming elections from NA-31 Peshawar.

Senior PPP leaders present on the occasion included Syed Zahir Ali Shah, Zulfiqar Afghani and former PTI cabinet member Ziaullah Afridi.

The PPP leaders accused senior ANP leader Ghulam Ahmed Bilour of failing to serve the people of Peshawar.

“Bilour should avoid contesting the 2018 elections, otherwise he would be unable to secure even half of the votes he had got during the 2013 by-elections [through which Bilour eventually managed to enter the assembly].”

Irfanullah joining the PPP is a big blow for the PTI.

The former PTI leader had applied for a ticket for NA-31. However, the party ignored him, awarding the ticket to Shaukat Ali instead.

This prompted Irfanullah to quit the party and contest the upcoming elections on a PPP ticket, especially after PPP’s candidate for NA-31 Ziaullah Afridi withdrew in his favour.

Former provincial president of PPP Syed Zahir Ali Shah reminded that all candidates were bound to follow the code of conduct announced by the ECP and those found violating the rules should be disqualified.

“We demand that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) prove that it is impartial and ensure transparency, otherwise the political parties will have to raise their raise voice against it,” he warned.

Shah also urged caretaker set up to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities impartially.

Referring to the role of PTI’s provincial government, he alleged that they have ruined the historical city of Peshawar on the pretext of ‘change’ and now everyone was cursing the party and its leadership.

Most of the PTI leaders, including former ministers, he alleged, were involved in corruption and that their stories would soon come to light. Particularly if the national accountability bureau launches inquiries against them.
