LAHORE:
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will issue a final list of party ticket holders after Eidul Fitr, sources within the party told The Express Tribune.

The PML-N held a high-level consultative meeting of the senior leadership, including party President Shehbaz Sharif and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, at Jati Umrah to finalise the election candidates, said the sources.

The candidates were finalised after weeklong meetings of the party’s parliamentary board.

However, the consultation process comes to halt today (Thursday) as Sharif and his daughter Maryum Nawaz leave for London from Lahore to meet ailing Kulsoom Nawaz.

The two are expected to return by next week, according to the sources.

On the other hand, Shehbaz said, “PML-N is the only party that held hundreds of interviews for 86 hours from June 4 to June 11 and the candidates were provided full opportunity to prove their public service work, political struggle and eligibility.”

He added that each candidate was interviewed during the meetings in order to complete the process in a transparent and democratic way.

“The people of Pakistan can see our performance while on the other hand one party awarded a ticket to a candidate who passed away a year ago and another party awarded a ticket to a woman who holds a PML-N ticket,” he said.

The former Punjab CM said that as a ticket aspirant, he also had to appear before the board for an interview. “Similarly former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz and other senior leaders also appeared before the parliamentary board for interviews,” he added.

It is also learnt that the PML-N has constituted a review board for addressing grievances of female workers of the party, who protested against not being placed on the priority list for women-reserved seats.

The board comprises Khawaja Saad Rafique, Rana Sanaullah, Nuzhat Amir Sadiq, Zakia Shahnawaz, Kiran Dar, Seema Jilani, Azma Bukhari and Saba Sadiq.

A group of women workers of the PML-N, meanwhile, protested for a second day on Thursday for not being placed on the priority list. Some of the protesting workers present outside the party secretariat on Wednesday were given a chance to explain their grievances before the party leaders.

According to sources, concerns of these female workers would be addressed, and some of them having serious reservations would be offered party positions so that they could play their role.

However, the list had been finalised and provided to the Election Commission of Pakistan and the chances of any of the shortlisted names being excluded were very bleak, said the sources.
