KARACHI: As the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) stands disintegrated, mainstream political parties have set their eyes on Karachi which has a total of 21 seats in National Assembly and 44 in Sindh Assembly after fresh delimitation of constituencies.

As chiefs of major political parties make their way to Karachi, local leaders have prepared special slogans to woo the voters in the megapolis.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the former ruling party in Sindh of which Karachi is the capital, would run the election campaign under the slogan “Peaceful Karachi, Everyone’s Karachi, Karachi’s progress for everyone (Pur Aman Karachi, Sab ka Karachi, Karachi ki taraqqi sab k liye).”

While Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would chant “Will make Karachi get its right (Karachi ko Karachi ka Haq dilwayenge)”, the rival Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would claim “We have restored Karachi’s peace, now we will restore Karachi’s glory” (Karachi ka aman bahaal kiya hai, ab Karachi ki roshniyan wapas layenge).

Secretary Information PML-N Sindh Khawaja Tariq Nazeer shared with Express News that after Eidul Fitr, party chief Shehbaz Sharif would begin his election campaign in Karachi.

He said the PML-N was contesting elections over “Vote ko izzat do (give respect to vote) and kaam ko izzat do (give respect to work)” slogans.

Vying to possess Karachi

The PML-N leader said that party supremo Nawaz Sharif would soon visit Karachi. He was of the view that the election in Karachi would decide the future prime minister of the country.

PPP Sindh General Secretary Waqar Mehdi called Lyari the second home of the Bhutto family. Party founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari had contested from the National Assembly constituency from where Bilawal was now a candidate, he added.

Bilawal would address a gathering in Lyari after Eid, said Mehdi, adding that he would be the next prime minister of the country.
