Former chief secretary to take oath as Sindh caretaker CM

KARACHI: In a late night development, political parties in Sindh reached a consensus and named former chief secretary Fazalur Rehman as the caretaker chief minister of Sindh.

The provincial government and opposition reached the decision after an hours-long discussion. The meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Opposition leader Khawaja Izharul Hasan, held at the CM House, concluded late on Thursday night.

Addressing a late night press conference, Shah said that around 30 names were discussed and Fazalur Rehman’s name was finalised with mutual consensus.

Opposition leader Khawaja Izhar added that Rehman was an apolitical individual and has vast experience in administration and governance.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had also nominated Rehman.

The caretaker chief minister will take oath at the Governor House in Karachi. Governor Sindh Mohammad Zubair will administer the oath.

The nominated caretaker chief minister Fazlur Rehman had served as a chief secretary of Sindh from 2007 to 2010.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was reportedly considering Hameer Soomro, grandson of former chief minister Allah Baksh, Orthopedic Surgeon Younus Soomro and Justice (retd) Ghulam Sarwar. Names also included Dr Mirza Ikhtiar, Dr Qayyum Soomro and Murtaza Wahab.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) nominated Aftab Ahmed Sheikh.
