4 WWE weddings more ‘royal’ than the Royal wedding

For wrestling fans it’s not a great ceremony unless someone disrupts it

KARACHI: The Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has been all the rage since last week. But come on, for WWE fans, it’s not a great, memorable wedding ceremony unless someone interferes and ruins it. While our desi weddings are also full of crazy shenanigans by the bride’s phuppo or the groom’s sisters, WWE weddings aren’t much behind. In fact, they may even be crazier and it turns out, can even be more ‘royal’ than the Royal wedding.

WWE has had 16 televised weddings in its history. But here are four memorable ones that easily leave the royal wedding behind.

1. Edge and Lita (2005)

litaLita, one of the greatest female superstars of all time, has been involved in two onscreen weddings. Her first one was with Kane, after her then-boyfriend Matt Hardy lost to Kane with the stipulation that the winner would marry her. Much to Lita’s dismay and despite Hardy’s interference, the ceremony went through and the odd couple got married.

However, Lita and Kane grew close with time until Edge entered the picture. Didn’t I say WWE was soap opera for guys? Well, Lita turned on Kane and decided to marry Edge. Now let me tell you, no contract signing or onscreen wedding ceremony in WWE goes uninterrupted and without chaos, and at least someone being beaten up.

Inevitably, Kane interrupted Edge and Lita’s wedding and ‘tombstoned’ the poor priest in the ring as the to-be-wedded couple ran for their lives. Thank heavens, no one choke slammed the priest at the royal wedding, right?

2. AJ Lee and Daniel Bryan (2012)

This is the latest wedding to happen in WWE… not really. Because it didn’t happen. Has it ever happened to you that the bride, at the time of the occasion, says qubool hai or ‘Yes’, but then reveals it was actually to someone else’s offer? That’d be a total bummer. And that’s exactly what happened to Daniel Bryan on Monday Night Raw’s 1000th episode back in 2012.

Lee said yes and then revealed she, in fact, agreed not to marry Bryan, but to Vince McMahon’s offer to become the new general manager of Raw. It sent Bryan into a frenzy as he yelled “No!” repeatedly. The then-WWE Champion CM Punk then came out and confronted Bryan. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson surprised the two, coming and announcing he would challenge Punk at Royal Rumble. He proceeded to hit his signature move ‘Rock Bottom’ on Bryan.

Not a great night for the bridegroom. Well, it’s great The Rock didn’t interfere the royal wedding and hit ‘Rock Bottom’ on Prince Harry. On another note, that would have been a lot of fun to watch.

3. Stephanie McMahon and Test (1999)

This was supposed to be a typical affair. Stephanie’s father Vince had warned if Triple H or any member of his faction Degeneration X interfered, they would be fired. As if such warnings have ever stopped anyone in the WWE, Triple H obviously interrupted the ceremony, only to show a video of him sedating Stephanie and marrying her without her knowledge. That’s sure to ruin a wedding ceremony.

If that had happened at the royal… actually, let’s not get into that.

On another note, Triple H and Steph have been married in real life since 2003. I’m sure their three children have heard interesting stories of how their parents got married.

4. Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth (1991)

This is perhaps the only wedding any true wrestling fan has ever cared about (and that includes their own, if they’re married), and truly more ‘royal’ than the Royal wedding. While the Macho Man Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth had been married in real life since 1984, their onscreen wedding in 1991 was the main event segment of the second biggest show of the year, SummerSlam. Gene Okerlund touted the couple as ‘a match made in heaven’.

The ceremony pretty much went quite smoothly. The priest read the vows and the bride and the groom accepted in what’s perhaps one of the most genuine moments in WWE history. The celebration continued outside the ring as the Macho Man and Elizabeth kissed, danced, ate, and opened presents.

What they didn’t know was there was snake in one of the gift boxes. Because, of course, there was, courtesy of Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts. When Elizabeth screamed in horror, the Undertaker attacked Savage with his urn and knocked him out, while Roberts continued to terrorise the bride with the snake.

The WWE’s original ‘royal wedding’ may not have ended in a perfect and peaceful manner, but fans will always remember the in-ring moment with the most loved couple in wrestling saying their vows to each other in front of the world.
