Second group of federal law officers also annoying SHC judges

High court judges had complained about previous batch.

KARACHI:

The newly replaced group of lawyers to represent the federal government before the Sindh High Court (SHC) have started annoying the judges with their poor performance.

The earlier batch of federal state counsels and deputy attorney generals (DAG) was also sent away after different benches complained about their performance. A similar warning came on Wednesday when Chief Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Salman Hamid, took up a petition.

The petition was filed by Baz Knitwear Industries to question the delay in the payment of refund claims. When the standing counsel of the federal government, Sheeraz Iqbal, sought time, the bench was annoyed.  “She was being regularly cautioned that a mere appearance in court is no service,” said the judge. “Whenever any notices are received, the office of the DAG and the standing counsel may collect the copies from the office and call comments directly from the relevant authorities”.

The SHC cannot be used as a post office and the judges cannot advise them on what is to be done in each case. “In case the performance of the DAG office — to which standing counsels are also attached — is not improved, the matter will be reported to the attorney general of Pakistan and the federal law secretary,” the judge warned. The hearing was adjourned.
