Pims starts weight loss surgery

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) surgeons have started laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery to treat obesity and type-2 diabetes after getting training from a US surgeon Dr Robert Rutledge.

Surgical unit II of Pims has started offering laparoscopic mini gastric bypass (MGB) surgery services in addition to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for treatment of obesity and diabetes.

A 60 year old woman who had BMI of 47 along with type-2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension went under the knife at Pims the other day. Dr Aatif Inam Shami successfully performed the MGB procedure. The surgeon along with other 30 surgeons from across the country had undergone training by Dr Rutledge, the inventor of MGB, who visited Pims in March to train Pakistani surgeons.

“I started bariatric surgery in February 2015 at Pims and over the past four years have formed an experienced team to take care of high risk obese patients” Dr Inam said. “It is a moment of pride for me and my team that in last four years, there has been no complications to date in our case series,” he said.
