Provisional VCs take charge at PU, LCWU

Dr Nasira Jabeen is first-ever woman VC in 136 years of Punjab University

LAHORE: The provisional vice chancellors at the Punjab University and the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) took charge on Saturday after Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) issued a notification.

Dr Nasira Jabeen and Dr Farkhanda Manzoor took charge at the Punjab University and LCWU respectively.

The HED notified both the provincial vice chancellors in line with the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and after interviews of the senior-most faculty members from both universities were held on Friday.

According to the notification, issued late on Friday for both universities, the provisional vice chancellors have been appointment until a regular appointment is made by the provincial government.

Dr Jabeen is the first-ever woman vice chancellor in the 136 years of Punjab University. She is the dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences and the Director of the Institute of Administrative Sciences. She is also president and member of various academic and professional bodies of the varsity. Dr Jabeen earned prestigious professorship of Prince Claus Royal Chair 2006-2007 in the area of Development and Equity at University of Utrecht, Netherlands. She started her career by joining Punjab University as a lecturer in 1984.



In a press statement, Punjab University said that the newly-appointed vice chancellor vowed to introduce the best model of management and promote the culture of harmony and respect in the university.  She was chairing a meeting of university officials after giving joining as vice chancellor on Saturday. Addressing the meeting, Dr Jabeen vowed to improve academic standard of the university at par with world’s best universities.

At the LCWU, Dr Farkhanda Manzoor has taken charge as the provisional vice chancellor. She is the chairperson of the Department of Zoology at the LCWU. She started her teaching career as a lecturer at the Garrison Post Graduate College for Women in 1990 and joined LCWU in 2004 as an assistant professor. Dr Mazoor has also held several administrative positions at the varsity, including director linkages, senior manager at the Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC) and director academics among others. She also received the best university teacher by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC).

Talking to The Express Tribune, Dr Manzoor said that she wanted to make efforts for the academic counseling for students for making job-oriented education. She said she wanted to focus on research efforts of the varsity. She said that it was good that a member of the existing faculty was given charge of the LCWU.
