Karachi University (KU) students affiliated with the Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT) on Thursday staged a demonstration against the Sindh Universities and Institutes Law (Amendment) Bill 2018.
The demonstrators blocked the road leading to Safoora Chowrangi and brought traffic to a standstill. IJT spokesperson Affan said the student body would stage city-wide protests if there demands were not fulfilled. “The day is not far when the Sindh government will do to varsities what it did to other institutions," he added.
Universities amendment bill referred to assembly with ‘minor changes’
The bill grants the Sindh government sweeping powers over varsity admission policy. It also allows for any provincial bureaucrat to be named university VC. Usually, the position is held by those with a background in academia.

Following the passage of the bill, the Sindh government will also be represented in the KU syndicate. Karachi University Teachers' Society (KUTS) has also expressed their reservations over the bill with members having staged several protest demonstrations over March.
