ISLAMABAD: Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, chairman of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, has distanced himself from a statement attributed to him on social media in which he launched a scathing criticism of firebrand cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi.

The fake statement on social media questioned the real objective of Rizvi's ongoing protest in Lahore. Rehman was quoted as saying that he had dissociated himself with the Rizvi's movement.

It appeared that Rizvi's Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) was working on someone else's behalf and had some vested interests, added the post that has recently gone viral on the social media.

However, the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee chief on Wednesday denied having made any such statement. He said the Facebook account attributed to him was fake and that he had only one official account with his name.

Rehman said he had approached the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director general and other relevant agencies to probe into the matter and find the real culprit behind the fake post.

While talking to The Express Tribune, he said, “I am currently president of the Tanzeem-ul-Madaris and chairman of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. I have no affiliation with any political party. There are some coward people who are using my name only to generate new controversies and debate.”

He further said that during the Faizabad sit-in, he was one of the members of the committee constituted by the government to negotiate between the protesters and the government in order to have a peaceful end to the sit-in.

Rehman urged the government to look into the matter and probe who was misusing his name. He said authorities need to be vigilant as fake news only spread confusion.

He also demanded that common citizens should be given the same protection against cybercrimes as in the case of government and other top functionaries.
