‘Depression major cause of suicide among women’
Large number of faculty members and students turned up at the seminar to improve their understanding of depression
SARGODHA/LAHORE:
Depression is more common in women than men and it is a major cause of suicide.
This was said by Gender Studies Department Chairperson Sarah Shahid during a seminar on World Health Day. The event was held on Friday at Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) and was organised by Applied Psychology Department and the Psychological Society, LCWU.
The objective of the seminar was to create awareness among students, faculty and the general public about the contributing factors of depression, prevalence of depression, diagnosis, treatment and its prevention.
A large number of faculty members and students turned up at the seminar to improve their understanding of risk factors, symptoms, management and prevention of depression.
While speaking on the occasion, Sarah Shahid said, “Currently, there are more than 300 million people suffering from depression worldwide.”
She added in Pakistan, around 16% of the people suffered from depression, while the rate for the same was 34% in the provincial capitals
She said that women were more vulnerable to depression which is one of the leading causes of suicide.
Talking to people you trust is the first step towards recovering from depression.”
