May 2007 Tragedy: Rawalpindi lawyers observe black day
Lawyers observed a black day on Thursday.
RAWALPINDI:
Boycotting court proceedings against the killing of lawyers and other people in Karachi four years ago, lawyers observed a black day here on Thursday. They remained aloof from normal court proceedings both at high and district courts, and lamented the killings and the government’s “indifference” towards the incident. “We, the lawyers community, demand constitution of a judicial commission to probe into the killing of innocent persons in Karachi in 2007 when Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry attempted to visit the city to address the bar association,” former President Supreme Court Bar Association, Hamid Ali Khan, said during his address to a gathering of lawyers during a district bar association meeting in Rawalpindi. At the meeting, local representatives of the lawyers expressed their unhappiness over the government’s inaction and urged the government to carry out an independent inquiry of the incident and punish those responsible for the attack.
