Education: CERF approves funding of $2.5m for children education
Funds will be used to renovate, reconstruct schools in South Waziristan and Kurram agencies
PESHAWAR:
The Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has approved the allocation of $2.5 million in order to continue children’s education programmes, by renovating and reconstructing schools in the areas of Serwakai, Sararogha and Tiarza in South Waziristan and Kurram agencies of Fata.
The nine-month project starting from April 2018 will accompany a government response and help increase enrolment particularly in the girls’ school of Fata. It will address the unmet education needs of around 13,000 people, including girls, boys, women and men in target agencies. The overall objective of this project is to provide quality education to children of the region, re-establish a routine and normalcy in their lives through psychosocial support, reduce risk of exploitation, provide a child-friendly learning environment in order to equip them with life skills. The initiative has been designed in response to numerous assessments and feedback received from government counterparts and communities in Fata.
Out of school children to get non-formal education
The project will renovate 80 partially damaged school buildings and will construct 50 manufactured classrooms in 25 fully damaged schools. Furthermore, it will also provide schools supplies and furniture to the renovated schools and train 210 teachers on pedagogy, psychosocial support and child-friendly teaching.
Communities will also be involved in the project activities and effective school management through the reactivation and training of 105 Taleemi Islahi Jirgas (TIJs) in the target schools.
The project activities will be jointly conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in close collaboration with Fata Secretariat. Both agencies have thorough experience in supporting the availability of quality education and have developed close collaboration with relevant stakeholders in Fata.
