‘Ban coverage of Nawaz speeches’

Five-line resolution urges SC to give directions to PEMRA to take immediate steps to stop Sharif’s live coverage

LAHORE:
The Opposition benches demanded that the country’s top court order the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to immediately ban live coverage of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s speeches on TV channels.

The demand was put forward by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf legislator Dr Nausheen Hamid in a resolution she submitted in the Punjab Assembly.

Dr Nausheen said the speeches of a man, who the Supreme Court of Pakistan had disqualified, should be banned. She added a ban should also be imposed on the publication of his pictures in print media. The five-line resolution further urged the SC to give directions to PEMRA for take immediate steps to stop Sharif’s live coverage.

Talking to The Express Tribune, MPA Dr Nausheen Hamid said the opposition was at a loss to understand why the media was giving coverage to a man who was no longer ‘Sadiq and Ameen’. “The former PM is no longer an MPA, MNA or president of the party.
