ISLAMABAD: At least eight stations house officers (SHO) of the capital police have been removed and seven others reshuffled in a bid to improve policing and ensure merit in the police department. The shake-up comes after weeks of scrutiny of police department’s inspectors and sub-inspectors for selection of SHOs.

Inspector General Islamabad Police Sultan Azam Temuri had ordered evaluation of all officers on the basis of their track record and past performance in order to appoint ‘clean’ and professional cops as heads of police stations.

The Central Police Office had invited applications from inspectors and sub-inspectors (SI) who wanted to become SHOs. However, interestingly only 118 officials among a pool of over 500 showed willingness to become SHOs. “There are around 150 inspectors and about 350 sub-inspectors in the capital police, but only 118 of them submitted applications for appointment as SHOs,” an official told The Express Tribune.

Green light for restructuring

A committee headed by DIG Waqar Chohan evaluated the track record and past performance of these 118 cops and categorised  them into A, B and C categories. Officers with an excellent track record were grouped under A category while those with tainted record were clubbed under C category. Temuri had announced to prefer officers in A category for appointment as SHOs while remove those falling in C category from public dealing at police stations.

Following the committee’s evaluation and selection process, the department notified new postings on Saturday, under which 24 inspectors and sub-inspectors were reshuffled. A total of 15 SHOs were reshuffled, while eight of them were removed from police stations and posted at Safe City filed offices. They include Inspector Aslam Kalyar, SI Naveed Akbar, Inspector Irshad Ali Abro, Inspector Mehr Nusrat Ali, Inspector Yaseen Bhutta, Inspector Abdul Ghafoor, Inspector Muhammad Ilyas, and Inspector Tanveer Abbasi.

Other notable reshuffles include appointment of Inspector Khalid Awan as SHO Kohsar, and Inspector Hakim Akhan as SHO Secretariat.

The officers’ evaluation is part of the IGP’s plans to curb corruption and promote honest and professional cops in the force. While announcing the new initiative at a press conference recently, Temuri said officers above the rank of inspectors will also face accountability.
