Enforced disappearance: Court gives Hyderabad SSP three days to produce missing journalist
SSP Peer Muhammad claims Kamran Sahito isn't in police custody
HYDERABAD:
The district and sessions judge of Hyderabad, Amjad Ali Bohio, gave on Wednesday three days to SSP Peer Muhammad Shah to produce missing journalist Kamran Sahito. The SSP claimed that Kamran, whose father alleged that he was picked up by policemen from their residence on February 6, is not in police custody.
Miral Ali Sahito, the petitioner, informed the court that his son, who worked as a sub-editor at the Sindh Express, was whisked away by uniformed policemen from their home in Naqash Villas, Qasimabad.
He claimed that a day after the arrest, he and some journalists were allowed to meet Kamran at the Qasimabad police station.
1,532 cases of enforced disappearances still pending
However, he complained that after that meeting, his son was booked in two allegedly fake FIRs of police encounters on February 10 and February 11 at the police stations in Jamshoro and Hyderabad.
During the hearing on February 19, the Hyderabad police submitted that Kamran was not nominated in any police case in Hyderabad. However, on the February 24 hearing, the police changed their statement, acknowledging that he was booked in an FIR of a police encounter.
The petitioner reiterated his fear for his son's life and urged the court to order the police not to kill or injure him in a staged encounter.
