Thalassemia: 5-year-old becomes youngest doctor in the world
Given honorary MBBS degree to realise his dream of becoming a doctor.
HYDERABAD:
A five-year-old’s greatest wish — to be a doctor — was granted by the Iqra University on Sunday.
The boy, Faisal Keerio, was given an honorary MBBS degree at an event organised for World Thalassemia Day. Four other children suffering from thalassemia were also given prizes at the ‘Wish Granting Ceremony’ organised by the Iqra University and an NGO for children suffering from life-threatening diseases.
Faisal suffers from severe thalessemia, which can cause an early death due to heart failure usually between ages 20 and 30. Though frequent blood transfusions and therapy helps, they may lead to too much iron in the blood which can damage the heart and liver.
Faisal’s family lives in Hyderabad but is originally from the Tando Muhammad Khan district. He is the first child in Pakistan to have been awarded the degree and the third and youngest child doctor in the world. His parents stood next to him, filled with pride.
