Jaya Bachchan opts for SP over ‘brother’ Amar

LUCKNOW: In a surprise move, the Samajwadi Party (SP) parliamentary board has decided to renominate its outgoing Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan in the biennial elections slated for June 10, party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said on Wednesday, reported Times of India (TOI).

The party has also decided to field Rashid Masood, former Union minister for the Rajya Sabha, he said. Due to depleted strength of the party in Uttar Pradesh assembly, it is in a position to nominate only two leaders to Rajya Sabha, from where seven of its sitting MPs are retiring in July this year, including Jaya Bachchan. According to TOI, currently, SP has 11 Rajya Sabha MPs.

For the Vidhan Parishad, the party would field three candidates, Balram Yadav, Ram Sunder Das Nishad and Ram Naresh Yadav (sitting MLC), Chaudhary said. Owing to Jaya Bachchan’s proximity to the expelled general secretary, Amar Singh, there were speculations within the party that she would not be given a ticket again and the SP may field its national spokesperson Mohan Singh to one of the two Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant, repoted TOI

Sabapathy k | 13 years ago | Reply As a senior SP (TN) leader, my view is that the Amar Singh story is "Ghatham Ghatham". The re-nomination of Jaya Bachan-ji to the Rajya Sabha is a true reflection of SP tradition of trusting loyalists to represent people and working for the welfare of the masses. The aura and charisma of the "so called" first family of the nation and the heir-apparent of that dynasty will not remove the distress and sorrow of the people of UP and the nation when the same dynasty is responsible for the under-development of UP, its people and the nation. A mere spending a night in the hut of a poor family is not going to wipe the backwardness that the same person/family had created. The people of this nation will not fall for that. Akhilesh-ji is a true representative of the force working for the upliftment of those left behind in backwardness. The secular and progressive rule of SP alone has taken UP to the state of development it is in now. And, SP continues to be a force to reckon with in National Politics. Under the leadership and guidance of Akhilesh-ji, SP will overcome all the obstacles and hurdles and work selflessly toward the welfare of the people of UP and the nation.
