CENTURION: New fast-bowling discovery Lungi Ngidi was the man of the moment as his six-for in the second innings guided South Africa to a comprehensive 135-run win over India on the final day of the second Test at SuperSport Park on Wednesday.
The win gives hosts South Africa an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series after they had produced a similarly dominant performance in the first game.
Ngidi had accounted for Indian skipper Virat Kohli before stumps on day four, leaving India reeling at 35-3. Kohli, who had scored a superb 153 in the first innings, was trapped lbw by a ball that stayed low and his wicket meant South Africa went into day five almost certain of victory on a tricky pitch.
"It was massive for us and I think it was massive for India, knowing Kohli’s not batting," South Africa opener Dean Elgar had said.
The win helped banish memories of the 3-0 loss in India in 2015-16 on spin-friendly pitches.
"We left India with a lot of scars," said Elgar. "Beating them in South Africa is quite satisfying for us. The wicket played into our hands. Our fast-bowlers thrive on bowling on wickets like this."
