Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and provincial law minister Rana Sanaullah must step down in the wake of a minor’s death in Kasur, failing to keep law and order in the province, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said on Thursday.
“If a deputy superintended of police can be suspended for the death of a peacock in Jati Umra (more) can be done in this case, some big head must roll in this case too,” he maintained, adding that everybody knew that the chief minister was responsible for the entire province.
Shah was speaking with media persons in the Parliament in connection with the current domestic situation, especially with reference to the Kasur incident.
This, he said, was not first such incident to occur in Punjab, but it got highlighted because previous incidents were not properly looked into by the Punjab government, adding that the same issue had been raised in Parliament again and again. “If one looks at police performance and court response on law and order situation in provinces, Punjab’s situation is worst,” he said.

The PPP lawmaker said that the incident highlighted the incompetence of the Punjab government and the local administration and culprits involved in this incident should immediately be arrested and punished.
“If they are not penalised as soon as possible the frequency of such incidents will soar,” he feared.
Condemning the incident of police firing on protestors in Kasur, he said: “What was the need for taking two more lives,” he said.
Reacting on comments made by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif against the judiciary and security institutions, Shah said that Sharif wanted to destroy the credibility of state institutions, adding that his actual purpose was something other than what he was saying (in public addresses).

“His aggressive attitude will only create chaos in the country … This is a very dangerous trend,” Shah maintained.
He said that Nawaz Sharif’s main aim was weakening state institutions. “This is not an encouraging sign as it will allow everyone to stand up and tarnish the image of institutions,” he stated.
Adjournment motion
Also on Thursday, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) also submitted an adjournment motion, seeking immediate discussion of the “cold-blooded murder” of a minor in Kasur in the National Assembly. The assembly session is likely to start on Friday.
Signed by 12 PPP lawmakers, the motion stated that “the tragic incident has once again raised serious reservations about the safety of children in our society.”
It also stated that over the past year, such incidents had occurred in same region with regularity but law enforcement agencies failed to trace the criminals and bringing them to justice.
“This is a serious issue and requires immediate discussion in the … house so that a concrete strategy may be devised to avoid (the recurrence of) such incidents in future,” it concluded.
