QUETTA:
Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Khan Zehri has vowed to confront a no-confidence motion submitted against him and to defeat his opponents’ attempt to derail the collation government in the province.

“We have always attempted to take along all collation partners and this made our rule during the past four and a half years very friendly. Yet we believe in the supremacy of democracy,” the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader said during his meeting with Minister for Ports and Shipping Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo, who is chief of the National Party (NP), a coalition partner. Former chief minister Dr Malik Baloch, Sardar Aslam Bizenjo and other NP leaders also attended the meeting.

Balochistan CM Zehri faces no-trust move

Fourteen members of the provincial assembly submitted the motion against Zehri on January 2, following which PML-N leaders Sarfaraz Bugti and Prince Ahmed Ali resigned from the provincial cabinet.

“Our opponents will face defeat in their no-confidence move because we believe in strengthening democracy and the electoral process,” Zehri said.

Hasil Bizenjo said his party would support Zehri for the continuation of the democratic process in Balochistan. “The National Party believes in supremacy of the Constitution and parliament. For that purpose we will play our role to foil the no-confidence move against CM Zehri.”

Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai also met the CM and discussed provincial affairs. The security situation in the province was also reviewed during the meeting.

Later, the governor summoned a session of Balochistan Assembly on January 9 at 4 pm.

Senate polls

Meanwhile, senior political leaders Nawab Ayaz Khan Jogezai and Sardar Yakoob Nasir said the sudden move against the CM appeared to be aimed at sabotaging or influencing the Senate elections due in a couple of months. They said certain elements wanted to deny the PML-N and its allies their legitimate share in the upper house of parliament.

Speaking at the residence of Sardar Nasir where several leaders condoled with him on the demise of his sister, Hasil Bizenjo said it was an undemocratic move to create instability in Balochistan, which was not in the interest of the province as well as the country. He pledged to defend the coalition and defeat the elements trying to destabilise Balochistan.

He said no MPA from his party, including Khalid Langov, would vote in favour of the no-confidence motion. Langov is among the prime signatories of the motion.

Bizenjo said most of the PML-N members had defected and were backing the motion, but his party would remain part of the coalition both in the province and at the centre.

Bid to avert no-trust motion against CM Zehri

Sardar Nasir, who is Senior Vice President of the PML-N, said the PML-Q enjoyed ministries during the entire tenure but was now betraying the CM. The Q-League was helping those who wanted to manipulate the Senate elections against the political will of the people. “They are obstructing economic development besides sabotaging the democratic process,” he said. He said those who had submitted the motion had defied the traditions of Balochistan and they should wait for the general elections instead of undermining the political process against the interest of the people.

PML-N MPA Dur Mohammad Nasir complained that he was not made a minister, while the Q-Leaguers remained in the cabinet.

However, former home minister Bugti claimed that the movers would prove their majority in the assembly. He alleged that the CM had bypassed the assembly. He said he was still part of the PML-N and the provincial issues should not be linked with national politics.  “It is a process of accountability,” Bugti told reporters.

He alleged that the government had withdrawn the security of the MPAs and ex-ministers supporting him. Bugti said the National Party should also support the motion.

Mir Qudus Bizenjo said he and his colleagues had also attempted to move no-confidence motions against former CM Malik Baloch. He said Mahmood Khan Achakzai had been the unelected chief of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party for over two decades. He also claimed that the CM was holding 10 portfolios.
