Have us audited by a US firm, Asif responds to Trump's $33bn claim
Foreign minister says the world will know who is lying and deceiving
A day after US President Donald Trump accused Pakistan of doing nothing in return for a $33 billion in military and civilian aid, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif has asked the former to hire an audit firm of his choice to verify the claims.
"Pres Trump quoted figure of $33billion given to Pakistan over [the] last 15 years," Asif tweeted on Tuesday.
"He [Trump] can hire a US based audit firm on our expense to verify this figure & let the world know who is lying & deceiving".
On Monday, moments after Trump's tirade against Pakistan, the foreign minister had said US allegations weren't something to worry about as Pakistan had already decided against "doing more."
China backs Pakistan as US cuts military aid following Trump's remarks
Meanwhile, aarlier in the day, the White House confirmed blocking an already-delayed $255 million military aid to Pakistan.
In his first tweet for Pakistan marking the New Year, Trump said the US had “foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years”.
He also once again accused the country of providing 'safe havens' to terrorists that the US targeted in Afghanistan.
The remarks drew angry rebuke from Pakistan, summoning US Ambassador David Hale and seeking an explanation on the tweet.
