One-wheeling, riding silencer-less motorcycles and aerial firing, however, will remain banned today and tomorrow

In a welcoming move, the Sindh government has decided not to block roads leading to Karachi’s Seaview, allowing citizens to celebrate the New Year’s Eve at the beach.

“The citizens of Karachi are responsible people, therefore, they shouldn’t be stopped from visiting Seaview on New Year’s Eve,” Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said while speaking with the media on Sunday morning, Express News reported.

He was reviewing security arrangements made to thwart any untoward incident from happening in the city during the New Year’s festivities.

Barricades, snap-checks mark New Year’s Eve

Roads leading to Seaview and surrounding areas are traditionally blocked to minimise crowd at the Karachi’s famous beach on New Year’s Eve.

One-wheeling, riding silencer-less motorcycles and aerial firing, however, will remain banned today and on January 1, according to a notification issued by the provincial government on Friday.

“It has been observed that over the years New Year’s Eve is celebrated with great zeal and people resort to aerial firing and perform dangerous stunts on motorcycles, resulting in fatal accidents and casualties,” read the notification.

Directing the DIG South to remove blockades from all routes in the city’s upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) neighbourhood, CM Shah said Karachiites will not create any issues for the administration.

“People should celebrate the New Year, but they should also take care of other’s happiness too… no one will be allowed to take advantage of the government’s decision and resort to aerial firing on the occasion,” he remarked.

Keeping 'traditions' alive: Sea View remains blocked due to ‘security threats’

The decision followed Sindh Home Minister Suhail Anwar Sial’s visit to different parts of the city including Seaview on Saturday night, when he ordered the administration to immediately remove all containers blocking the main roads in DHA and Clifton areas.

He, however, directed the departments concerned to ensure implementation of Section 144 on the last day of 2017.
