Passengers, pedestrians most affected by RTCs in Punjab
Speeding, carelessness and wrong turns are major causes behind road accidents

Road accidents claim many lives each day and several suffer injuries due to negligence while driving and violation of traffic rules. Even those people, who are not involved in driving, bear the brunt and get affected with road traffic crashes (RTCs).
A recent data report which has been compiled by Rescue 1122 officials revealed that the highest number of victims involved in road accidents were passengers and pedestrians.
The data, which is available with The Express Tribune, showed that from January1, 2014 to December 22, 2017, passengers form the major proportion of the total injured victims in RTCs. The passengers are then followed by pedestrians and victims from age one to 10 years and above 60.
Ten of a family die in Indus Highway crash
The data disclosed that a total of 1.105 million people were injured in 925,068 RTCs across Punjab and 13,425 died during the accidents. Of them, 64% victims (712,034) were passengers, pedestrians and victims aged one to 10 years and above 60.
Of the injured, 38.6 % (426,768) victims were passengers, 16% (179,965) were pedestrians, while 9.5% (105,301) were victims from one to 10 years of age and above 60.
In 2014, a total of 245,397 people were injured and 2,547 died in 201,120 RTCs. Of them, 47% of the victims (116,944) were passengers. Similarly, 15.5% (38,182) victims were pedestrians, while 9.9% (24,292) victims were aged between one to 10 years and above 60.
In 2015, 274,244 people suffered injuries and 3,094 people died in 227,390 RTCs. Of them, 47% (129,295) victims were passengers. Similarly, 15.8% (43,338) were pedestrians, while 9.4% (25,993) victims were aged between one to10 years and above 60.
In 2016, 283,085 people were injured and 4,092 died in 238,782 RTCs. Of them, 14% (39,361) victims were passengers, 20.7% (58,678) were pedestrians, while 9.3% (26,383) victims were aged between one to10 years and above 60.
In 2017, 302,724 people were injured and 3,690 died in 25,776 RTCs. Of them, 46.4% (141,168) victims were passengers, 13.14% (39,767) victims were pedestrians, while 9.5% (28,633) victims were aged between one to 10 years and above 60.
Grenade lobbed at police lines
The data stated that the number of road accidents was increasing every day. In 2014, 551 RTCs were reported on daily basis throughout Punjab. In 2015, 622 RTCs per day were reported, in 2016, 654 RTCs were reported, while in 2017, 724 RTCs were reported per day.
The number of deaths has also increased with each passing year, the data statistics revealed.
In 2014, at least seven deaths were reported in RTCs on average. In 2015, the figure rose to 8.48 deaths per day, in 2016, 11.22 lives were lost, while in 2017, 10.36 deaths were reported on daily basis.
In addition, the number of injured victims also increased with each passing day. In 2014, 672 people were injured, in 2015, the number rose to 751, in 2016, 829 people were injured, while in 2017, 850 people suffered injuries in road accidents.
