ISLAMABAD: After women were barred from participating in by-polls in Upper Dir last week, a government body for women has called on the top election body to nullify the elections.

By-elections for the Darora Union Council in Upper Dir were held on Thursday, December 21. The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) noted that there were reports which suggested that a day before the polls, leaders of all religious and liberal political parties vying for the seat had allegedly reached a verbal agreement to bar women from casting their votes in the election.

From the 17,201 registered voters in the area, around 6,813 are women. As per the agreement, no woman cast their vote in elections.  “The NCSW demands the leadership of all political parties who were part of this agreement to take notice of the situation and ensure strict measures against all those involved so that such practice is never repeated in the future,” noted NCSW Chairperson Khawar Mumtaz.
