LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) destroys over 2,000 litres adulterated and substandard of milk in the city on Sunday.

Punjab Food Minister Bilal Yasin and PFA Director General Noorul Amin Mengal set up pickets at different entry points of the city to check milk quality being transported in the city. During the inspection, the PFA food safety officers found water and chemical adulteration in various milk canes that were discarded on the spot.

Mengal told the minister that the authority was monitoring the transportation of loose milk in various areas of the city to curb the sale of adulterated and substandard milk. He highlighted that the PFA action against milkmen and milk transporters was producing encouraging results as milk quality has improved in the provincial capital.

He pointed out the authority has constituted several dairy safety teams besides food safety teams to ensure supply of wholesome milk in Lahore. These dairy safety teams would take charge of their responsibilities by the end of the current month.

Mengal underscored that though the authority was trying hard to stop the sale of adulterated milk, it was impossible to curb this menace until milk pasteurisation law was imposed. “The law has already been approved and now the authority is in the process of devising a strategy to implement this law.”

The authority is planning to phase out the sale of loose milk from markets in the next five years as it requires a lot of investment and training for implementation of pasteurisation in entire milk supply chain, he said. The authority was also organising awareness session with different stakeholders to educate them about benefits of pasteurisation.
