Council of Common Interests meets today

Diamer-Bhasha Dam, tight gas policy among issues to be discussed.

The Council of Common Interests (CCI) will meet on Thursday to discuss a 15-point agenda including construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam, approval of tight gas policy and floating of shares of power distribution companies.


However, the meeting, to be presided over by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, will not review a proposal of two weekly holidays and energy conservation plan for summer, according to documents.

According to the 15-point agenda, a summary on the construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam will be presented in the meeting and it will also review reports on the Thar coal project and working of the Pakistan Railways.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will present a working paper on flood-protection measures and a report on reconstruction of flood-hit areas will also be reviewed. CCI will discuss approval of a tight gas policy for tackling the energy crisis and review the current population and housing census exercise.

The Board of Investment will submit a bill on special economic zone for promoting investment in the country. According to the agenda, CCI will review issues related to funds for projects which have been transferred to the provinces under the devolution plan.

Besides issuance of shares of power distribution companies in the stock market, the transfer of management control of these companies to the private sector will also come up for discussion.
