To many English medium students, reading Urdu poetry is a laborious and tedious task, studied for the purpose of passing exams. At best they might respond to a new age band belting out sufi lyrics.

Khaldunia High School students, however, experienced the delight of reciting and singing a range of Faiz’s poetry as part of his centennial birth anniversary celebrations.

What was most rewarding was the number of children — more than 20 — who volunteered to recite verses.

Students from grade 4 to grade 10 participated in the recital, choosing from myriad themes like “bol ke lab azaad hein teray” and “hum dekhengey lazim hey ki hum bhi dekhengey”.

One student’s comment sums up the occasion quite aptly, “I never knew Urdu poetry could be so beautiful!”
