KARACHI:

A constitutional petition has been filed in the Sindh High Court by Independent Music Group SMC Pvt Ltd and its CEO, Mir Shakilur Rahman, against the interior secretary and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).

During Wednesday’s hearing, the state was represented by newly appointed Standing Counsel Sheeraz Iqbal. The petitioner’s counsel, meanwhile, submitted that his client intends to uplink his sports channel, Geo Super, from Pakistan and thus applied for a satellite television licence.

The counsel termed Pemra’s rule 9(5), which requires security clearance from the interior ministry, malafide and pleaded with the court to declare the provision illegal.

He asked the court to also declare the delay in issuing the TV licence and landing rights illegal. After hearing the arguments, the SHC division bench, comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Shahid Anwar Bajwa, reserved its judgment.
