ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) is likely to get road construction machinery under a grant programme funded by the Japanese government.

IMC Mayor and Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Sheikh Anser Aziz held a meeting with representatives of Japan’s Marubeni Corporation on Friday to prepare the case of the grant.

Funded under Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme, the Marubeni Corporation will provide the IMC with two road stabilisers, two emulsion asphalt lorries, two vibratory single drum rollers, four pneumatic tired rollers, four vibratory tandem rollers, four walk-behind rollers and wheel-type asphalt pavers. “Economic and Social Development Programme had been prepared, and after formal approval of the mayor, the case will be submitted to Ministry of Interior for onward submission,” read a statement issued by the IMC on Friday, noting that this was the second follow up meeting between the IMC and the corporation.

Aziz said that the provision of machinery, especially for road carpeting and earthwork will bolster the capabilities of IMC’s Machinery Pool Organisation (MPO) and help in areas where infrastructure development was still not up to the standards of developed sectors. He added that the MPO’s workload had increased as the city expands and that the new machinery will help address the needs of the city.

“The state-of-the-art machinery will not only improve the operation but will also help save costs by utilising new stabiliser method of road construction,” Mayor Aziz said.

Confused | 6 years ago | Reply In the abscense of reliable and evolved systems at CDA adding such machinery would be meaningless. It should however be mandatory for mayors to get proper training and grooming before they assume charge as city managers. In Islamabad’s case it’s mayor holds two jobs but can’t justify either of his assignments.
