LAHORE: A woman in Lahore has given birth to a child on the stairs of a local hospital’s emergency ward, sources said on Friday.

The woman who is said to be a resident of Badami Bagh area was admitted to the city’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital late on Thursday night.

In the morning, after checkup, she reportedly left the gynae ward and gave birth to a child outside the emergency ward of the hospital, the sources said, adding both the mother and the child were in a stable condition and will most likely be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days.

The incident came just three days after a woman had given birth on a street outside the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Raiwind because there were no doctors at the medical facility.

As soon as the news broke out in the media, provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafiq reached the Ganga Ram Hospital and suspended the director of the emergency ward and formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, also arrived at the hospital and termed the incident as inefficiency of the government.
