Public health engineering dept to complete 95 schemes by June 2018

CM reviews progress of department's 223 schemes

KARACHI: Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed the public health engineering (PHE) department to complete 95 water supply and drainage schemes in the province by the end of the ongoing fiscal year. "If these schemes are completed in time, the drainage problems of most of the villages and cities would be solved," the CM said.

Shah gave these directives while presiding over a meeting at CM House on Wednesday to review the progress of the PHE department's schemes.

The meeting was informed that the PHE department is working on 223 schemes, of which, 36 are new schemes, while 187 were started earlier. Out of the 187 ongoing schemes, 117 are drainage schemes, while 70 are water supply schemes. The cost of the ongoing schemes has been estimated at Rs4.7 billion for which the government has released Rs1.5 billion so far.

The CM said that he had given the PHE department a target to complete 95 schemes, including 36 water supply and 59 drainage schemes, by June 2018. "I want their completion in time," he said directing the secretary to regularly update him about those schemes through progress reports.

Shah particularly referred to the drainage schemes of Larkana in the meeting. In union councils 13,14,15,16,17 and 19 of Larkana city, a drainage system is being constructed for Rs30 million against which Rs22.5 million has been released. The CM directed the secretary to expedite completion of the scheme because necessary funds had been released for it.

Drainage schemes of Shikarpur city were also discussed in the meeting. Sewage is flowing on the streets of Shikarpur and the city needs new drainage system, the CM remarked. The meeting was informed that Rs35.72 million has been allocated for the ongoing work of construction of surface drains in 14 different localities of Shikarpur.

The meeting also reviewed the work on drainage and water supply schemes in Kamber-Shahdadkot, Tando Allahyar, Tharparkar, Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushero Feroz, Dadu, Kashmore, Sukkur and Khairpur.
