Rangers in Karachi: Special powers deadline extended

Sindh govt extends special powers given to Rangers in the province by three months due to rise in target killings.

KARACHI:
The Sindh government extended special powers given to rangers in the province by three months, on Wednesday.

The Rangers’ power extension period ended on April 18, and has been renewed by the local government as target killings in Karachi rise.

Express 24/7 correspondent Shaheryar Mirza reports that apart from their power to conduct search and raid operations and arrange security check-posts in Karachi, the Rangers have the authority to engage, detain and interrogate suspects, before handing them over to the police.

These powers have been given under section five of the Anti-terrorism Act of 1997.

The interior ministry of Sindh has also issued notifications in this regard.

The powers of the paramilitary forces were extended in light of the escalated target killings in Karachi.
