The Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association continued their strike on Monday because the government had yet “to fulfil their demands”.
Due to differences among government functionaries, the problems of Sindh’s education system are multiplying, SPLA president, Sukkur region, Professor Shafqat Jokhio told The Express Tribune at the strike camp outside the press club.
“Our peaceful protest has entered its third phase since April 11, which will continue till April 20”, he said.
On April 21, professors and lecturers throughout the province will hold a meeting at DJ Science College Karachi, after which they will stage a protest and sit-in outside Chief Minister House.
Time-scale promotion has been approved by the finance department and now the summary is lying with the chief minister for final approval. But the chief minister is reluctant to sign the summary, Jokhio alleged.
Criticising the government’s policy regarding promotions, he said the lecturers appointed in the year 1990 are being forced to work on BPS 17 and they have been denied legitimate promotions during the last 21 years.
Colleges across the province are facing a shortage of 3,500 lecturers and the government had promised to make fresh appointments by March 30, but the promise remains a mere promise, he added.
“We haven’t boycotted classes yet and are continuing a peaceful protest and so the government should consider this and fulfil our demands as soon as possible.”
The association has already organised several protests in Karachi and other parts of the province.
