KARACHI:

The Jashn-e-Faiz celebrations on Sunday were not just about remembering the famed poet and intellectual, they also gave budding entrepreneurs a chance to show off inventions that may well shape the future course of our country.

Students from the NED University of Engineering and Technology came with a machine that was capable of harnessing wind energy and turning it into electricity. Zeeshan Nafees, a member of the team that developed this machine, said that it was a solution for the energy shortage in Karachi and Hyderabad. There are suitable wind corridors in the region, he said, where the wind blows at a rate of five to six metres per second and thus can be a good source for electricity production.

Other equally impressive inventions were also on display. The NED chapter chief of the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Azhar Kazi and his team showed off a model of a ‘weather data logger’ that can automatically record the temperature at defined intervals.

Another gadget was a solar cooker that could absorb heat from the sun and use the energy to cook at home.
