Australia endured a mixed day in their Fed Cup World Group play-off tie against Ukraine in Melbourne.
Jarmila Groth produced a crushing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Olga Savchuk in the morning battle on clay at the Glen Iris Valley Recreation Club but the visitors returned fire as Anastasia Rodionova lost to Lesia Tsurenko in the second match.
World number 30 Groth expressed satisfaction at her performance. “I had a game plan that I had to take on the court and I managed to do that without a lot of errors,” said Groth.
“I made the winners when I had to.”
