10 bitter break-ups that shook Bollywood

Talk about an unwanted blast from the past!

When it comes to love, Bollywood celebrities are not far behind the characters they portray on-screen. The industry insiders are known for their on and off romances which, at times, have gone on to break entire marriages (Read: Arjun Kapoor's alleged affair with Malaika Arora).

Bollywood actors who got married way too early

But it all depends on how the celebs handle the attention revolving around their love lives. Some former couples parted amicably while others have displayed personal feuds in public for the world to feast their eyes on. As compiled from Yahoo!, here are some of the bitterest break-ups Bollywood has witnessed. As they say, true love isn't easy!

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone seemed to be madly in love with her Tamasha co-star Ranbir Kapoor, and their chemistry was as apparent off-screen as it was on-screen. The Piku actor even got her lover's initials inked on herself. However, Ranbir’s close proximity with his Raajneeti co-actor Katrina Kaif put a spanner in the works.

Nonetheless, both Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actors have now moved on. Deepika found love again with Bajirao Mastani co-star Ranveer Singh, and Ranbir got into a relationship with Katrina. They both remain civil and have even worked in films together after their break-up in 2009.

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif

Right after his break-up with Deepika, Ranbir jumped into a relationship with Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani co-actor Katrina. The pair kept it quiet for a long time until they were spotted holidaying in Ibiza. After that, they were pretty open about dating and also confirmed that they had moved in together. The duo confirmed marriage plans on many occasions too. However, Ranbir was at it again with his commitment issues which lead to their break-up last year.

Katrina has confirmed that the two have a great working relationship but Ranbir shared that Jagga Jasoos was the last time he would be seen sharing the screen with Katrina.

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor

These two seemed to be head over heels for one another but as Kareena got closer to Saif Ali Khan during Tashan, the duo broke up. They met nine years later, on the set for Udta Punjab where they remained cordial. The pair did not share any screen time for the movie but promoted the film together amongst other co-actors.

Both are now happily married, with adorable babies. Kareena is married to Saif who she has a son with, while Shahid opted for an arranged marriage with Mira Rajput and has a daughter.

John Abraham and Bipasha Basu

John and Bipasha were the hottest power couple of their time. They dated for ten whole years after their time filming Jism together. Their sizzling chemistry had everyone weak in the knees. However, even after a decade; John was not ready for marriage. Soon, both were rumoured to be cheating on each other – Bipasha with Hollywood co-star Josh Hartnett and John with various other co-actors.

Understandably, the duo broke up and have not spoken to one another since. While John finally made his way towards commitment by marrying investment banker Priya Runchal, Bipasha settled down with her Alone co-star Karan Singh Grover.

Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai

Salman and Aishwarya’s love blossomed during their time together in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. It was very apparent that Salman was smitten by the Taal star and wanted to marry the beauty as soon as he could.

However, Aishwarya was definitely not on the same page as she had finally begun gaining recognition within the film industry. The former Miss World was not ready to settle down and her parents were also against it.

As a result, Salman allegedly became aggressive and started abusing Ash physically. The two broke up and have not worked together since. Aishwarya is now married to Guru co-star Abhishek Bachchan with whom she has a daughter. Salman, however, is still single. Could it be karma?

Vivek Oberoi and Aishwarya Rai

Soon after her break-up with Salman, Aishwarya moved on with Kyun! Ho Gaya Na… co-actor Vivek Oberoi. Although neither of them publicly admitted to their relationship, it was quite obvious that Vivek was head over heels for the belle too.

Vivek held a press conference in 2003 where he confirmed that Salman has called him 31 times, threatening to kill him. Subsequently, his relationship with Aishwarya died, along with his career. The pair has not worked together since. Vivek married in 2010 and has two children.

Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor

Abhishek started dating Karisma during his sister’s wedding with Karisma’s cousin back in 1997. They were set to get engaged but called it off due to various reasons.

Lolo’s mother Babita was apparently wary of their relationship due to Abhishek’s lack of success within the film industry. Jaya Bachchan was not too happy either, as she insisted that Karisma quit her acting career after marriage. The two broke up and have not worked together since.

Karisma divorced in 2016 after a 13 year marriage. She has two children.

Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji

Abhishek and Rani were rumoured to be in a serious relationship and the duo were also supposed to tie the knot.

However, it was reported that once again Jaya was not fond of Abhishek's choice. Abhichek called it quits with Rani and the pair have not spoken since.

While he went on to marry Aishwarya, Rani recently tied the knot with film-maker Aditya Chopra.

Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty

Back in the 90s, Akshay and Shilpa took their on-screen chemistry off-screen. Their love blossomed on the sets of Main Khiladi Tu Anari, but ended when Shilpa came to find that Akshay was cheating on her with Twinkle Khanna.

Akshay went on to marry Twinke and Shilpa moved on to businessman Raj Kundra.

Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia

Preity dated one of the top Indian businessmen Ness Wadia for many years. She made her relationship public in 2005 and they took it to another level by becoming business partners in 2008.

However, Ness’ mother was not in favour of her son marrying Preity, who is rumoured to have been slapped by Ness after which, they broke up.

Nevertheless, they remained friends until 2014 ,when Preity filed molestation complaints against Ness. The Kal Ho Naa Ho star accused her ex of threatening and abusive behaviour during their time as business partners. Ness denied all the accusations.

Preity is now married to her long-time American beau, Gene Goodenough.
