The man was drunk when the incident took place, said Manju Nagar, sister of the victim.

“My brother-in-law Sonu and Sanju tried to stop Sanjay from urinating. He hurled abuses at us. My brother-in-law pushed him and closed the door. After some time, he came back and started firing indiscriminately. Sanju tried to save her two-year-old son and got shot,” said the sister.

“We have registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused and his brother who was with him. We have launched a manhunt to nab them,” said Indian police officials.

Sanjay is a criminal and several criminal cases have already been registered against him, they added.

Soon after the incident, family members of the victim took her to a local hospital while the other neighbours called the police. Manju Nagar’s condition was said to be stable.

“Sanju is out of danger as the bullet just brushed past her stomach. She was admitted in the night. She will be discharged on Saturday,” said a hospital spokesperson.
