KARACHI: Interior Minister Rehman Malik met with Chief Minister Sindh and Sindh ANP president in Karachi on Thursday where all three decided to launch an operation against extortionists and target killers in the city.

The meeting was scheduled after the Malik addressed a graduation ceremony of Coast Guards in Karachi.

While addressing the graduates, Malik stated that the presence of foreign agents operating in Balochistan is rising.

He urged that the smuggling needs to be stopped immediately.

Sharjeel Memon urges stern action against target killers

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said on Thursday that the government will take action against any group harbouring target killers.

He told a news conference in Karachi that the rising number of target killings is aimed at destabilising the government and confirmed that a number of suspected target killers have already been arrested.

Sharjeel claims some target killers are being protected by certain political parties, while others are independent hired assassins.

The information minister says stern action will be taken not only against target killers, but also against groups they are affiliated with.

The minister has also urged the police to carry out a thorough search operation in areas where target killings are reported.

Rangers official killed

A mobile snatcher shot dead a Rangers official in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area on Thursday.

Town Police Officer SP Asad confirmed that a mobile snatcher was fleeing after snatching four mobile phones when a police team led by ASI Ramzan started to chase him.

The robber haphazardly started firing at the security personnel in which a Rangers official was killed.

The police fired back at the snatcher and shot him in the leg and got hold of him near Five Star Chowk.

The arrested was identified as Javed and a pistol and the four stolen mobile phones were also recovered from his possession.

karachite | 13 years ago | Reply why is it that those commenting are as blood thirsty as the bloody Taliban being bombed up north? do you hear yourself Mr a.s. ahmed say it aloud.. "kill the robber point blank"? that is not justice Mr ahmed. a step in the right direction would be for the government to build prisons which can not only house criminals but also put them to hard labour thereby giving something back to society. As for the matter of reducing gun crime.. how about making the law as it is in the uk? where possession of a firearm can get you 3 years in prison and possession of each bullet with said firearm is another minimum 5 years. that is 5 years per bullet! that too barely reflects the damage a bullet can cause. thereby simple possession of an unlicensed loaded revolver will send you of to prison for at least 33 years. lets see how popular gun crime is then.
Billoo Bhaya | 13 years ago | Reply @Hatim Hussain: You hit the nail on its head with your statement; "share the booty equally among them". A civilian has a case against Rehman Malik for threatening them, looting their possessions when he was in FIA, I think in Lyallpur District (readers please don't ask me to use its current name because the Saudi King played no part in founding the city. It was Sir Charles Lyall, Lt. Gov of the Punjab who founded the city-see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CharlesJamesLyall). If one forgets one's history we then lose our Identity as we have.
