SUKKUR:

A landlord was arrested on Wednesday on charges of holding a jirga in Waryam Unnar village.

The jirga members had declared a man and woman karo kari and ordered that they be “punished” by death.

Sources said that on Tuesday night, Farooq Unnar tried to kill his wife, Mukhtaran, after accusing her of having illicit relations with Asif Unnar, a resident of the same village. However, Mukhtaran managed to escape and took shelter at her parent’s house.

The next morning, Farooq went to a landlord, Mohammad Hassan Unnar, and told him that his wife was having an affair with Asif. He admitted that he tried to kill her and that she was now hiding at her parent’s, the sources added.

Mohammad Hassan immediately summoned a meeting of community elders at his house.

The alleged karo, Asif, has not been seen since Tuesday night and is said to be on the run. Therefore, the jirga ordered that both Mukhtaran and Asif be killed.

Once the news of the decision spread, Mukhtaran’s father, Ghulam Sarwar Unnar, went to the Bello Mirpur police station and registered an FIR against nine men, including Mohammad Hassan, Kamal Unnar, Farooq, Nazir Unnar, Gaman Unnar, Sattar Unnar and Hafeez Unnar. The Ghotki police raided Hassan’s house and arrested him. They said the other accused would also be arrested soon.
