Heavy downpour causes multiple casualties in city

At least 10 people electrocuted, eight killed in wall collapse incidents

KARACHI: At least 18 people, including five women, died while several others were wounded in rain-related incidents across the metropolis on Monday.

According to Edhi Foundation and Chhipa officials, around 10 people died due to fatal electric shocks while eight persons were killed in wall collapse incidents. They added that no casualty was reported in any drowning incident. Most of the incidents occurred in District Central and West.

Numerous roads of the metropolis were inundated and power supply to several areas suspended as monsoon showers with heavy gust of winds hit the city in the late hours of Monday. "We received multiple bodies but families of most of them took the bodies without completion of medico-legal formalities. Only four bodies underwent medico-legal formalities," said Sindh police surgeon Dr Ejaz Ahmed Khokhar.

Two people died after wall of their residential quarter collapsed near Bab-e-Khyber in SITE area. Heavy machineries were called at the site following the incident and the bodies were retrieved from under the debris. The bodies were later shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where they were identified as Tanvir, 32 and Babu, 31. SHO Amir Memon said that the collapsed residential quarter was established at the upper floor of a flower shop in the area, adding that there were no more bodies under the debris.

In another similar incident, two siblings died after the roof of their house near Disco Morr in the New Karachi area collapsed. The deceased were identified as 14-year-old Maryam and 12-year-old Junaid. Their bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, from where their family took their bodies without completing medico-legal formalities.

A married woman, Hajira, 28, wife of Abdul Latif died after the roof of her house fell on her in Faqira Goth on SITE Super Highway. In a similar incident in SITE Super Highway, a 56-year-old man, Manzur, was killed when the roof of his house near Jamali Goth collapsed.

Karachi receives moderate to heavy rain

A young man, who has yet to be identified, was killed after a wall collapsed on him at Kaniz Fatima Society in Surjani Town neighbourhood. Similarly, an unidentified boy reportedly died after a signboard of a tent owner at the cattle market on Super Highway fell over him.

An eighteen-year-old girl, Bisma, daughter of Pir Shah, was electrocuted inside her house in Old Golimar area in Pak Colony. Her body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Similarly, Ruqayya, 35, wife of Manzur, died of electrocution, while working at her house in Rasheedabad area in Khawaja Ajmair Nagri.

In North Nazimabad, a 45-year-old girl, Fatima, wife of Muhammad Jan, died of electrocution. Her body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Two young motorcyclists died of electrocution after they fell down on the stagnant water where an electricity wire had fell in the Garden area. Their bodies were shifted to Civil Hospital, Karachi. In a similar incident, a teenager, Ramiz died of electrocution due to a fallen electricity wire in the Rizvia Colony area.

Karachi receives scattered rainfall

Another man, identified as 45-year-old Maazullah, died of electrocution in Khamiso Goth area of New Karachi. A young man, Rustam, also died of electrocution in Sector 5E of New Karachi.

A 45-year-old man, Kaleemullah, died of electrocution after he received electric shocks from an electricity wire in Bhangoria Goth in Azizabad. Aslam, 22, son of Naeem, died of electrocution in Madinah Colony, New Karachi. A 45-year-old man, Aslam, son of Ghulam Muhammad also died of electrocution in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 18.
