KARACHI:
A gang of robbers looted Tuesday morning a branch of a private bank in old city area.

The robbers also seized a weapon from the bank's security guard after committing the robbery. Meanwhile, the police detained five employees of the bank, including the branch manager, for investigation.

Police officials said that the robbers entered the Kharadar branch of Apna Microfinance Bank, located within the limits of the Napier police station at around 8:35 am. The three robbers had arrived at the bank on a motorcycle. While entering the bank, the robbers held the cashier hostage at gunpoint and looted Rs600,000 cash from the cash counter.


SHO Zafar Iqbal said that the robbers also looted gold from the bank and took a weapon from the security guard while fleeing the scene.

Following the incident, officials from the Criminal Investigation Agency, Counter-Terrorism Department and district police reached the site and collected evidence.

SHO Iqbal said that the bank was looted after proper planning. The police suspects that the bank staffers were also involved in the robbery, he added.

The robbery took place before the bank timings, while the branch manager, Anwar, and a security guard were present during the robbery, he said, adding that the police have detained five bank staffers, including the bank manager for questioning. No case was registered till the filing of this news story.
