Rescue 1122 prepares to meet floods

Main objective of the training was to impart boat engine maintenance training among DERT rescuers

LAHORE: In order to ensure readiness to tackle floods, the Punjab Emergency Service inaugurated a training workshop on boat engine maintenance to meet threats across the province.

The workshop was organised on Friday by Rescue 1122, in collaboration with Provincial Disaster Management Authority and Pak Suzuki. As many as 43 Disaster Emergency Rescue Team (DERT) workers participated from flood-prone districts of Punjab.

While addressing the participants, Rescue 1122 Director General Dr Rizwan said the main objective of the training was to impart boat engine maintenance training among DERT rescuers.

“The rescuers should be prepared for flood management and all tools and equipment should be ready,” he said.

Emergency Response Plans: ‘Prepare for flood contingencies’

The DG added an outboat motor, an engine to operate rescue boats, played vital role in operations during floods.

He said Japan was a model for disaster preparedness and the Punjab Emergency Service was in coordination with Japanese emergency services for assimilation of flood rescue and disaster management techniques.

“In the wake of devastation caused by floods in Punjab over the previous years, the significance of flood management, rescue and relief activities has increased manifold,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Technical expert from Suzuki Japan Koji Fukuda said Rescue 1122 staff was passionate and enthusiastic to learn and deliver. He said he was proud of passing on the skills of flood management to emergency staff.
