Security worries delay the count: census joint commissioner.

KARACHI:

Green-capped census teams have been knocking on doors in every area but Pehalwan Goth, where security worries had delayed the start of the house listing.

The first part of the census, listing of residential units, started across the city on April 6, a day later than the rest of the country but in Pehalwan Goth, the listing finally kicked off - somewhat - on Friday.

The reason for the delay was a security lapse, said Census Joint Commissioner Zarar Jan. However, the Karachi DCO has now ensured proper security and the census teams have finally agreed to visit the goth, he added.

For the census, Karachi has been divided into circles, blocks and charges. Each block comprises 200 to 250 buildings while a charge comprises 50,000 units. Pehalwan Goth has been categorised as a separate charge.

Meanwhile, Sindh Census Commissioner Noor Muhammad Leghari, Joint Census Commissioner Farooq Ahmed Baloch and Deputy Census Commissioner Muhammad Ashfaque went around Korangi Town to find out how the house listing was progressing. They were briefed on the census by the town municipal administration.

Leghari told census staffers that the census department’s officials were in close contact with them and would work to tackle their complaints. He encouraged them to share suggestions on improving the process. He told residents that if a building has been missed out in the data collection, they should contact them. Later, the census commissioner visited Chakra Goth, Noorani Basti Nos. 1 and 2 and other neighbouring areas in PS-124.
